Engineering Opportunities at Warwickshire County Council
Design Services, Warwickshire County Council are a civil engineering business unit within the Local Authority that provide a design consultancy service to both the private and public sector. The core business is comprised of the design and construction of highways and highway structures, but we also manage the maintenance of County's highway structure assets and operate a building and structural design service.
This year we are aiming to appoint two new Graduate Engineers. The proposed posts will be in the Bridge and Structural Design and Highway Design Teams.
The Bridge and Structural Design Team are responsible for the technical design of new highway structures and educational buildings, often working as part of large integrated teams including a wide range of engineering disciplines. Projects range from new buildings to new highway and drainage infrastructure to the improvement or replacement of existing structural assets which have fallen into disrepair or require a change in use. The team also provides technical engineering support to County Council Depts seeking to enhance existing farming infrastructure and waste management facilities and we have even had the opportunity to provide a technical advisory role to local government projects in Sierra Leone where they are seeking to improve their local municipal facilities.
The S278 Section facilitates the delivery of developments within the County. The Section has a large portfolio of Developer-led highway schemes, and is responsible for technical approval, procurement of contractors and supervision of these schemes
Typically, the day-to-day work for the successful candidates can involve any stage of a construction project including feasibility studies, planning consent, detailed design, contract document preparation, procurement, site supervision and later asset management and maintenance.
Key requirements:
As a new Graduate Engineer, it is not necessary for you to have practical experience of working on Civil Engineering projects but candidates who have this background will find it to their advantage. Ideally you will be completing an ICE accredited BEng or MEng course and will have studied modules applicable to the type of work undertaken by Warwickshire County Council.
We are looking for highly motivated individuals who will look forward to the challenge of taking responsibility for managing projects and who are keen to develop competence in a wide range of civil engineering skills.
Applicants will need to hold a valid UK or EU passport or visa to work in the UK. Please note that the County Council will not be able to offer sponsorships for International applicants to acquire a Tier 2 visa because the salary being offered for these positions does not meet the current threshold for a Tier 2 visa.
It is preferable if applicants hold a full UK driving license or intend to acquire one in the near future. Owning a car is not essential as the County Council operates a pool car service.
