Warwickshire County Council’s Gypsy and Traveller team works in partnership with the local councils, Police, education, welfare/ support services, the Gypsy and Traveller community, Equip, the national Gypsy and Traveller federation and the Police and Crime Commissioner. By working together we ensure a consistent approach is taken to support our Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community, fostering an environment that enables the development of community cohesion and when necessary take proportionate consistent enforcement action.
The Role
Warwickshire County Council has an exciting opportunity to recruit to a new role, Tactical Engagement Officer within the Gypsy and Traveller team. The post is full time, 37 hours per week and is based in Warwick, with the expectation the post holder will provide countywide support to all Warwickshire County Council owned Gypsy and Traveller sites and countywide support and leadership for Unathorised Encampments.
Working within the Gypsy and Traveller team the successful candidate will support the delivery of the shared vision “creating strong partnerships across all sectors to provide provision that addresses inequality and creates community cohesion within the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, local residents and businesses”.
The Tactical Engagement officer is responsible for developing, delivering and evaluating a consistent evidence led multi-agency approach across Warwickshire to unauthorised encampments, unauthorised developments and breaches of tenancy. To achieve this the successful candidate will need to:
The Tactical Engagement Officer is required to assist with wider team duties as required to support the delivery of a comprehensive and coordinated countywide Gypsy and Traveller service.
Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you will need to have experience and a good understanding of how to effectively engage with individuals and groups from deprived and/ or excluded communities.
The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate their experience and/ or qualifications in a relevant work setting (housing, enforcement, restorative justice practices).
We are looking for a community-focused individual who can demonstrate their experience in leadership, negation and accountability. You need to be an excellent communicator, strong at influencing and persuading as well as being flexible and innovative in your approach.
The post holder will work as part of a team and take the lead on Gypsy and Traveller tactical engagement related work.
The post holder will have the ability to work unsupervised, use initiative to work sensitively within the Gypsy and Traveller community, wider settled community and work with key stakeholders to advocate for the Gypsy and Traveller community and lead on legal action when required.
The post holder will be required to keep up to speed on the latest national and regional developments in relation to legislation changes and operating practices. The post holder will be responsible for briefing the team, senior management, and stakeholders on the implications of the developments. This offers an excellent development opportunity and the post holder will be supported, guided and trained by members of the Gypsy and Traveller and Community Safety Team and wider stakeholders.
